Default Good times, good food, & good company

Some friends and I spent Memorial Day week out on the Sound chasing bears and gorging on shrimp. We originally planned on traveling over to the eastern side, but we did not make it that far. The water was flat and the weather was stellar.

Spring was upon us and the hillsides were free of snow and greening up. We never saw a bear on the beach in this area. We did see eight bears on this slope one evening, though. There was a lot of snow and alders to go through before the slope was accessible. It was early in the hunt, so we figured we would wait for a beach bear.

Whales were all over the place.

We ate like kings! Pork cop sandwiches were on the menu for this afternoon with some beddar cheddar dogs for an appetizer.

We finally spotted some bears on the beach. We nearly bumped the shore before this little fur ball spotted us.

Did I mention that the weather was fantastic?

    Nap time.

We finally took care of some unfinished business. My friend from college came up last spring and missed a very large boar. This time his shot was true and this PWS blackie didn't leave the beach until we shook the bones out of him. It was a great stalk that was all captured on video. I think his smile says it all.

"the surgeon" setting up shop. Time to pull toes and get everything turned and salted. Kind of ironic that we set up the office under a bearing tree, don't you think?

Great pics and story. PWS is one of my favorite places in Alaska, always nice to share it with good friends.

This bear hung out eating grasses and sedges a bit too long. The hide on this bear is just amazing.

We spent a week on the water and ran out of Crown, beer, and our water supply was running short. We had plenty of food and the lies/stories were plentiful. Here are a few more shots.

    A couple of happy hunters.

    Patience on the hook.

    A few shrimp.

    Default Nice

Great photos, wonderful story. Looks like it was too nice out there to bother coming back. Some good friends and bears that cooperated just added to an already great adventure. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Spring bears in the Sound is one of my favorite hunts. No need to rough it, in fact we sleep and eat better out there than we do at home!

    Thumbs up

Looks like one heck of a time in PWS! Glad to see everyone is getting nice weather this spring and the bears are cooperating.
