Thumbs up Happiness is being out-fished by the wife

I spent the last few days down at the Russian River with my wife, 1 year old child, two friends, and their two kids, ages 1 and 4. Needless to say, it was a little more...complicated than usual with the kids along, but it was a great time. I've now got a permanent smile plastered across my face, specifically because I was thoroughly out-fished by my wife on opening day. She had her three fish in something around 20 casts, including a few that broke off while she was fighting them. She never had one foul hooked, she played them calmly and patiently, and she just put on a great display of fishing skill. I couldn't be more proud! She hadn't fished reds in two years, and is still relatively new at it regarding how many times she's tried, but man...she did great. Meanwhile, I flogged the water for a looong time before I finally put my 3rd fish on the stringer. It's good to be humbled once in a while.

Here are the two ladies who did a great job carrying the living cargo the three miles upstream to the fishing hole.

My boy wasn't quite sure what to make of my wife's first fish of the year...but I saw the twinkle in his eye as he was thinking of catching his own one day soon.

Here's the family shot with our respective limits of opening day reds. Man, I love the first trip of the year! It was spectacular weather to boot.

My friend also took some time to teach his 4-year old son how to fish. He didn't land one (mainly due to my huge screw-up on the landing net ), but he seemed to have a great time anyhow.

At the end of the day, my boy was tuckered out and ready for the ride back to the campground. Being a dad is awesome, and I look forward to sharing more such experiences with my wife and son in the years to come.

I also had the chance to packraft the Russian on the 10th, the day before fishing opens. I posted a short float report and pictures on this thread in the rafting forum.

    Default Cool

    Brian,

    I love the pictures!!

I really like the one where the little guy is checking out the fish, he doesn't quite know what to think.

Exposing the little ones to your sports makes it take on a whole new meaning don't ya think??

BTW you have a great looking start of a family, enjoy.

Just a bit. At least one 5 day trip, possibly late next week...maybe two such trips. I've just got my PWS sablefish permit to fill while helping my brother with his halibut IFQ. Depends on the fishing, and whether my sister needs crew in late July or August.

Thanks for the comments on the pictures, everyone. I enjoyed sharing them.

    Atta Boy!!

    What else can you say?

I was selfish and caught reds until my arm and side burned. 14 hours of fishing and a multitude of releases later, I'm grateful for the plethora of opportunity that was presented.

I wanted to stay and hang with chuck and john but it's hard to be away from my little ones for 24 hours.

I've got the smoker going with my fish and the neighbor's. He's the reason I didn't make it for the beer. It looks like another night without sleep. We're doing a suicide run on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I hope you find the camper that fits your needs. I hope I find one as well.

Nothing better in life than to enjoy the simple great outdoor pleasures with the ones you love. I get more joy watching my wife and kids catch a fish or take a moose than doing it myself. My dad and I always fished and hunted together and still do on occassion and those memories are burned in my mind for life. Same holds true for my wifes and both sons first moose and first kings, halibut etc... A family that plays together stays together. Really enjoyed your family pics Brian and wish the best of summers and fall with you and your family.
