338-06 Came Through
Just wanted to drop a note of thanx here for all the advice on caliber
choice and bullet choice as they both performed great on a recent
Brown Bear and Black Bear hunt(pictures in photo archive).
The 338-06 was outstanding and the barnes 225 did its thing.
Such a great site here with intelligent open minded members who share
their opinions openly.
Congrats Cap,the 338/06 is a fine round for sure
Congrats!!! I took a look at the pictures, and it's a fine couple of bears. How big was the brown bear...its melon looks pretty big.
The 338-06 is a truly fine caliber (as you now know). I custom built one for my son as a graduation present. How far were the shots? Did you recover the TSX's or did they pass through? Details sir...
Alaska Fish - Game did a Quick Check on the skull and said it was
25 3/4" - Which was way above my expectations as I was just
looking for a true representative brown bear from Alaska. The skulls and Hides are still with the outfitters so I don't have any more info than
As far as the slugs I did hit him all three times- first shot went into
the shoulder area then after that it was hard to tell as there was
3 or 4 more entrys (or exits) it was hard to tell.
After a 6 hour skinning job for the 3 of us (he was soaking wet and mudd from nose to tail) we were to tired to rip into the carcass.
Thanks CJ for the further info and congratualtions again on getting it done. You'll have excellent memories each time you look at it on the wall...even the 6 hour skinning job.
good for you...
I am still trying to figure out what it was that possessed me when I sold a .338-06 with a Doughlas barrel, McMillan stock and commercial mauser action. It still haunts me, especially when I look at my grandkids. I think it is our most useful big game "wildcat" and I still beliieve we will see it chambered in more factory rifles.
