    My brother had a great established site that they would regularly harvest three bears out of each year, with an average of about 10 bears visiting it regularly. He offered it to me since he now puts his efforts toward his cabin area off the Yetna. I was tempted, but man...the gas bill is the killer. It would have cost me $50 in gas each time I went to re-bait or hunt, plus the six hours or so of time to run there, carry bait in, and come home. Personally, I'd rather spend the time (and money) doing a multi-day spot-and-stalk hunt instead.

    Not knocking baiting AT ALL - it's darn near the only way to hunt black bears in some areas - but given my schedule, finances, and priorities, it just doesn't make sense for me at this point.

    My bear hunting is CHEAP,
    Bait= free
    gas= 1-2 trips total 15.00
    bullet $4.50

    I stick to fall alpine bear hunting so blue berries are the bate and the available terain is my "ground blind" now if we really got into the cost of all that alpine hunting gear it would be insane! Luckily all of that was paid for out of the sheep hunting fund, so it doesn't count. <grin>

    I'd say about $300 on bait and $100 on gas.

    Default a lot

    I won't even begin to add it up!
    The biggest expense is the gas. I like the idea of doing a longer spot and stalk trip but have to use my days wisely, when I can get them.
    I look forward to the spring and getting out so much that we will make a RUN to the bear stand on Tuesday, hunt all night, and then show up to work Wednesday. Very tired and not too coherent! Do that all season, tell we start fishing anyway.
    I try buy the cheapest food I can get, old donuts and what not. Need to find the old bread I saw posted.

    For scent I boil down a pound of black licorice in a gallon of water, add two or three bottles of anise and that's it. Spray it all over and it smells real sweet!

    Baiting bears is real work and is in no way a "guarantee". For all who have done so, it's a real education in wildlife behavior as well as human propaganda. So many like to put bear baiting along with trapping, which is another endeavor many opine on but have no experience with. I think bears are smarter than post people.

    Thumbs down No way man!

    There are some things I refuse to do in life and dredging up the cost of hunting is one of them. I keep them in an archived place in my brain where truth serum (or my spouse) cannot penetrate. That's expensive hide and meat!
