    Default Black Bear Success

hello all... i shot my bear 28 may at 1141 PM... bear measured 5' 11''.. hes a big boy. he was super fat, and was as wide as he was long. here are a few pics. shot him at 22 yards.... good second bear. im just getting him tanned and getting the meat turned into sausage... hope you like the pics.... quick story goes like this. sat on my bait station at 1930. 2341, i saw the bear. i grabbed my gun and tried to move when he was not looking, he saw me getting set up for the shot. i had to waiit for a broadside shot. he started quickly moving away.... this all happened in the matter of like 20 seconds.... i DID not even really get a chance to aim with my marlin guide gun chambered in 45-70. he moved and i pulled the trigger. he darted off. i did not know how far he went but heard him huffing and puffing, making me believe i got a lung shot. 30 minutes later i tracked him for like 40 yards. It was 0020 in the morning and being by myself, and only having a headlamp i stopped tracking a wounded bear in the dark, and headed home... got home at 0200 and hung out with a friend. at 0400 i picked up vic and went back out to find the bear. found him not 20 yards from where i stopped tracking him. My shot was awesome, he sprayed blood everywhere out of the entrance and exit wound. he faded quick. vic and i got him all skinned out and all that good stuff. also take notice at the huge neck, and paws on this guy for his short length. he was a hog, me and vic could barely move him around and there was no way we could pick him up.

Great bear! The white flashing on his chest would look great in 3/4 mount.

I got one about that size that had a 5" white patch on his chest, it's a very unique feature.

Sometimes the length of the bear isn't relative to the age and size of the bear, neither is the skull for that matter. Sometimes long bears have little skulls and sometimes short bears have huge skulls. It just makes it that much harder to judge these critters.

How did you measure that bear? I have a hard time believing he's not at least a 6 1/2 foot bear from the pictures.

Did you measure with the hide off the body?

He's a pig! What did the skull go? Did you average the length and width to get your squared hide number?

    Default Measurements

How do you measure a bear to get your square? Nose to tail & What to what??? Then I take it you average the two #'s together to get the square.

    Default to square a hide

measure with skull and paws removed. Lay the hide flat, not stretched, on the floor (hunters definitions of "not stretched" vary, so even squared measurements can be off a little), and measure nose to tail, then toe to toe on the front legs. Average the two and you get the square. If he had a nose to tail length of 5'11" undressed, I'd guess the hide to square out much bigger- by 6" to a foot.
