    Default Misty Fjord Blackies

About a week ago my #2 son said let's go hunting Memorial Day weekend and I agreed. The hunters would be kingfisherktnson1, kingfisherktnson2 and the old man. We were to leave after work on Friday for a 40 mile run to our first night forest service cabin stay and then hunt Saturday morning and head to another cabin for a couple of more nights and return home to Ketchikan on Memorial Day.

    kingfisherktnson#1 and kingfisherktnson#2 @ 1st cabin

After a good night's sleep with an oil stove keeping us toastie we packed up and hauled all of our gear down the long minus tide beach. As I waited for the #1 & #2 to row out and get the boat (owned by #1 & #2) I had a visitor scrounging for breakfast.

We did a morning hunt without seeing anything while checking out where we want to head for an afternoon and evening hunt then headed for our next cabin where we would range into and around the Misty's. After settling in we made some lunch and headed out about 2:00 in the afternoon figuring we'd be back after dark.

The following sets of pictures are in one of the areas we wanted to concentrate on.

We hunted in the area till about 7 then headed back towards the cabin. We spotted a blackie on the beach, got to shore and #1 had the shot. -300WSM

One shot put him down and he rolled down the beach under this log.

I lost most of his picts and I haven't got them off the other cameras yet.

No skull measurement yet, but he squared 6'.

Sunday morning we got up at 4:30 and were on the water by 5:30. We ranged out the furthest today, but didn't see many bear. One teen age brownie about 7.5' and another brownie we estimated at 8.5' which is very large for our area. We put a stalk on him but he was smarter than we were and we were busted.

Late in the afternoon we had about 25 miles to cover to get back to our cabin by dark so we started out. About half way there we spotted a nice blackie on the beach and #1 son let us off the boat and he backed away while we started our stalk. We could see he had a nice head but the hind quarters were rubbed some but #2 son decided he was a great 1st bear for him. He was shooting open sights so we got within 125 yards and knocked him over but it wasn't a instant killing shot and he scooted into the woods and headed up a mountain while squirting blood all over the country side. #1 son got the boat anchored and came in to help in the recovery. We started tracking up the mountain and had an excellent blood trail to follow. After running around a bit #2 found him and finished the job.

We skinned him out, (6'5') cut up the meat and had an honest 125 lb pack down off the mountain. It sure is great to have pack sons around.

    Picts to follow next entry

All-in-all we had a great trip, spending time in this great land, dad & sons bonding time, great weather, covered 250 miles and used about 100 gallons of gas. I'm ready to go again.

Rob: We had a great weekend, I took my cannon along to try out but the boys got to do the shooting. But all is well if you're out and having fun.
