Thumbs up I love my job....

had a freight run to the end of the bay, and a hunter pick-up the next day, so i took the opportunity for a little playtime in between.
stopped overnight at notellin' bay for some black bear hunting... wandered all over, not much sign, grass still short... was stopping by camp for a bite when i heard a commotion in the woods, wood-on-wood type banging... something big making a hubbub, and two blackies popped out of the brush and loped by camp. one stopped at about 30 yds, i brought up my muzzleloader (lyman GPR .50, 90 gr of pyro under a PRB), pulled back the hammer... and passed.
coulda shot two bears that would have squared at least 6 1/2'... if i took 'em both and strung them together.
looking for a bigger one this year... had a blast, watched them goof around and run up the hill (never did find what was making the commotion!!!).
my buddy saw a sow with a new cub, we had a nice fire and watched it burn down while we listened to the saw-whets hoot...
dug a quart of steamers, and went back to work the next morning....

Thanks for the report Dave. It makes me want to live in Homer again. My only regret is that I didnt spend enough time across the bay when I was there. Keep the reports coming!

please explain- "saw-whets hoot..." heard of blue grouse hooting called " hooters " in SE. did not think we had those in this part of the state.

If they were from Nome, nothing good can come of that group. Especially if they know MartenTrapper!!!!

Actually I'm disappointed Dave. If you had let me know some locals were headed your way I would have sent a unit 22 care package.
