Thread: Byers lake bears

    Default Byers lake bears

I have heard a lot of people talk about the population of grizzly bears near this lake and I was looking to see if anyone has hunted them out that way. Looking to go possibly on Sunday to find one.

    Default Bears, Yes...

I hunted Kesugi Ridge, which is the mountain just west of Byers Lake. We hunted at the wrong time of year because at that time they were down on the lake and adjacent streams feeding on fish. This would be a good time to hike up high, if you drive in to the campground there and hike back you might have a good chance of finding some. Although, I do have to warn you, you will have to hike quite a ways back... give yourself 5 days roundtrip to have a good chance of success.

By the way, AkHunter45, I'd be more than willing to share some detailed information about that area and the best ways to access it. It's beautiful country!

Send me a PM if you are still thinking of going there as an option.

Where again exactly is Byers Lake, sounds familiar but I need a reminder.

    Ahhh ok. Remember now.

I saw a huge black bear on my way from Homer to Anchorage yesterday.
It would of been an easy stalk, about 1500 yards up on the ridge, feeding near a small stream. Let my gun on the boat in Homer or I would of definately made a move.

When you get to the top (it's quite a hike) it's all worth it.
