    Question Musk Ox $ Question

For those that have drawn and gone....

What was the amount of money spent once you got to your hunting destination on the island? I'm not referring to airline prices or shipping meat home...just the cost of the transporter or guide.

You can PM if you would like.

    Thanks

    Default Transporter Cost

A few years ago I paid a tranporter $1800. Then there was the $500 tag ...etc. I think the whole hunt cost $4,000 to $5,000 for everything including the shoulder mount and the tanned back skin.

    Default Shish

Father/Son hunt out of Shishmaref last week - 2 ox
    approx $7000 door to door
    plus 30,000 Alaska Airline miles
    plus taxidermy (est $3300 total)
minus whatever I can recoup by selling 2 backskins ($500?)

Net damage will come out right around $10,000 or $6,500 had I done it solo.

    Anyone looking to buy backskins

    Guess Im kinda lucky then.....

Two sons and I each Picked up the registration permit 0$

Watched the "local" Muskox for a week from our whitefish camp hill, 0$

9 people (kids gotta help)working the animals and cutting it up, cleaning the skins for drying, 0$

Used 5 gallons of gas to go to the Ox and back to camp with the entire family, and 3 Bulls, then take the meat we wanted to freezer to a village friends house, to our freezer, 30 gallons R/T, 35 total, 274.75$
If you can't Kill it with a 30-06, you should Hide.

This is the only time I've heard some one say that they were "lucky" to pay $7.85/gal for gas

I was surprised at how available the reg permits really are.

The transporters on Nunivak are running $3,500 this year plus $500-$1000 for any non-hunting observers. My hunting pard has a Nunivak tag for this year and we tried to make it out there last week. We got weathered in in Bethel because of high winds in Mekoryuk and never even made it out to the island. So far he's out a $2,000 deposit, a $500 tag, a couple hundred bucks in loding in Bethel, and 30,000 AK Airline miles and didn't even get a chance to hunt. Unless they extend the season it's kind of doubtful he'll make it back out there. We met another guy that was trying to get to the island that was going on day 4 of being stuck at the airport in Bethel with the forecast getting worse and no end in sight. Don't just budget money for that hunt, budget lots of time for weather too.

    Default weather

Its was tough getting to Shish last week. Took 4 flights to get there (turned around 3x) but only one to get back. My meat however is still sitting in air cargo in Nome. Haven't flown cargo all week.

Just a piece of advice, don't watch the BET weather, watch the MYU weather. Don't fly to BET unless it's looking good for Nunivak.

If ADFG hear from enough tag holders, they will extend the season. IMO, there is no biological reason to not have the season go another 15 days.

I'll second that. It was quite pleasant the whole time we were stuck in Bethel, but apparently it was crap in Mekoryuk. F&G says they expect near 100% success for that hunt to meet their management objectives so they want all the tag holders to get their ox.

    Cool Bethel Holding Pattern

Ditto what has been mentioned. Down time in Bethel can be some of the biggest drain. Stick it out, it is worth it in the end.
