Great quiz. Missed a couple on the quiz- didn't miss the one on the hill.

Thanks for sharing! Great test. Good info.
Excellent thread!
Thanks for posting this, Brian.
Wife and I worked on this together for her upcoming hunt.
It was also a great "shoot, or don't shoot" situational primer too....(given the nature of these cliff divers)
Where did your wife draw?

Good info to have, it helped! This one is 9 3/4 and should make b and c..
Kind of a crap test. A lot were obvious and then there were the ones that look like white spots on snow. There was the one that gave you the third choice of "Impossible to Tell" (which it was but I called a billy), and this picture was better than a couple of the others with definite answers. Something good to get a look at the animals though.
Fish and Game called me today and asked me about my hunt this year. They are specifically looking for ways to get better information out to hunters to help them sex goats including potential changes to this quiz.
Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of info I could provide them to help a new goat hunter. Honestly the best thing is to take someone along who has hunted goats. I feel that I could probably judge a decent billy now that I have hunted them and looked a few over in the field. Honestly they all look big alone on a rugged mountainside!

I agree LuJon. Going from not ever seening a mountain goat before this year to helping be atleast part of 6 goat kills I feel I now know a little more of what to look for. It does seem more obvious after looking over maybe 100 goats this year it is easier to tell. Like you mentioned though they all look big when all by themselves on the mountainside when you first start hunting them. IMO you can look at pics all day and it helps, but until you start comparing them in the field and seeing what a billy or nanny looks like up close in your hands it as hard for me to tell until I was on a couple "oh that was a nanny"![]()
I too got that phone call asking about my hunt and what they can suggest to improve Billy take.
With a spotting scope and enough time your chances of selecting a Billy go way up. It's those quick decision hunting moments that get me confused.
Most of the time your high enough that the clouds are thick, your fatigued, and you just want to put a stamp on you hunt. Thats when you need to stop and watch and just enjoy being in the alpine. Thats when you'll properly identify a Billy. Of course just having luck helps too. It just takes patience and a willingness to go further. It's so hard to pass on a shot knowing you'll likely end up climbing another thousand feet and a couple more miles in goat country. Thats what it takes though.
Thats kinda what I told the guy.
So is it safe to assume that F&G is only calling those that reported shooting a nanny?? I didn't get call I'm feeling a little left out![]()
Ya.....I think so because my wife didn't get a phone call. She shot a big ol' billy. She too felt kinda left out. I had some of that Nanny last night on the BBQ.......tender and delicious!
