    Cool Need help skinning beaver

    Never have skinned a beaver before and just "got" one. Can use some advise on what to skin on it?? Do I skin the feet or cut them off, and what about the tail? I do not plan to have it mounted and may just sell it. I also thought about making a hat, or may just tan it for a hanging display. Any help will be apprecited, thanks, Mark

    This is clean skinned, the most difficult area is around the tail, the cuts in the meat are where I back up to stay close to the skin. It's likely you may nick the first few so just go slow and stay close. I don't like to flesh a loose hide so I clean skin. I can usually finish a big one in about an hour. If you have a kit try him first, just recognize the skin is thinner and easier to cut, but comes off easier. Watch for the nipples they are easy to cut off. Original cut is from tail all the way through the lips to tip of nose.

    Hey Bob, that is worth a thousand words. I see you are not saving any of the tail but did keep the feet on. Nice looking beaver and I like the "holder". The beaver I have is 41" long, not sure if that is a big one or not, as this is my first. I also notice a vee notch out of the tail, as yours has one also. Seemed kind of strange, is this an injury along the way? Thanks for showing me the pictures. Should this be stretched right away? I usually just skin and freeze racoon and sell. With this beaver I would like to skin, stretch, tan myself. Not sure I can do this but am willing to try. Thanks again, Mark

    The feet get cut off at wrists, and ankles. The tail bites are very common, usually territorial in spring.

    Bob, you are quite right on many points. Difficulty around tail got me two nicks, the first nipple got me, "beavers are the best training" as this took me at least two hours, I'd rather skin two deer. It is now drying and I thank you for the advise. Mark

    Bob, the only beaver I ever skinned was a road-kill that I wanted to try. Yeah, it stunk to high-heaven! I was advised not to use a knife to avoid the cut-marks on the hide, but to use a bone. Ever hear of that? Dumb? Found an old bone or antler piece (cant remember which) that had a natural "blade" and went to work. It worked and it came off the body surprisingly well (with some elbow grease)....

    BTW, I see a bunch of cut-marks in the meat on the last pic, but the others it looked like you just peeled it off the body!?
