    Default Removing rear hub, King Quad

    The on-going saga of the old KQ unfolds. I put in new bearings all the way around a few weeks back, then some CV boots, then finally got some new brake shoes in for the back wheel. Trouble is I can't pull the hub off to get the dust cover and the ultimately the drum off (I didn't have to do this before, because it came with the brake disassembled so all I had to do was reassemble it with new bearings).
    So anyway, the jist of my question is: how do I pull the hub off of the rear wheel so I can get to the brake shoes? I can't get it to budge...

    Talking A big hammer....again

    Take the hub nut off and then the hub should come off of the axle. It has probably welded itself to the axle with dirt and rust, but it will come off. The axle is splined to mate with the hub. You may try to get a wheel puller to fit and put some pressure on it then whack it with a rubber (or metal depending on how mad you are getting...) hammer.

    AKmud-
    the hub is off the axle. I hope I'd attaching this image correctly, but it isn't the axle I need loose from the hub; it's the hub from the whole brake assembly including the dust cover and the interior drum. In other words, pull off part 1 to get off part 26 and part 12 to get to the shoes.

    I had to find a bigger exploded view to see which numbers you were referring to, but I think I figured out which ones they were.

    The hub (part #1) is not wanting to separate from the dust cover? If so, the only thing holding it is a rubber seal. The hub turns with the wheel and the dust cover is stationary.

    You say the hub is already off of the axle? Did you pull the axle off of the bike? The backing plate for the brake assembly should stay on the frame of the bike. I don't think you can get to the mounting bolts until you have the dust cover and drum off.

    I'm having a hard time picturing what you are explaining. Here is a link to an exploded view that I can enlarge. Check it out and then we will be on the same page as far as part numbers.

    Default Just the hub and brake unit- no axle

    I pulled the whole A-frame with hub from the quad frame leaving the axle still attached to the transaxle, etc. on the machine.

    What I have now is parts 1,28, and 20 stuck together (with, of course, the brake guts inside). I suspect that it is the seal holding the hub (#1) to the brake drum or dust cover, but I'm not sure. I have tried the usual pounding and such.

    I can get a screwdriver between the dust cover and the brake backing plate and can separate it a ways from the brake plate, but then when I try to pry off the hub by pushing against the dust cover (#28), it just pushes it back against the plate, closing the gap.

    Still confused...

    It would appear that item #30 dust seal, is holding item #1 to #28. I just need to figure out where to put pressure to separate these parts.

    Default Brake Drum

    I used to have a Kawasaki 400 with drum brakes. They always filled with crap when I was in soupy stuff. It became a matter of course that I would pull the drum and flush all the junk off the brakes and let it dry out before reassembling it. I wonder if you don't have a drum full of junk? You may have to back off the brakes and take a deadfall hammer such as a large rubber or nylon hammer and tap it all around the outside and on the face of the drum to break it free.

    Thanks for the reply, Contender, but the inside of the brake housing is clean since I just recently reassembled it (it had been torn down when I bought the wheeler). I've probably only put on less than a mile before realizing I was wasn't going to sneak by with the amount of brake shoe I had left.

    Default Hmmm....

    Can you get the dust cover to separate from the backing plate? It looks like the brake drum has four studs that hold it to the hub. At first I thought these studs were the wheel studs, but they aren't, part #2 show the wheel studs. If you can remove the bolts holding the dust cover to the backing plate (looks like #26 and/or #29) then the dust cover along with the drum should come off of the brake pads and you can see if the drum bolts to the hub from the inside.

    My best guess so far. I don't remember having this much trouble getting mine apart....

    Wish I could remember how to do this. I owned one and sold it after driving it into the ground. I think I had the same problem. I think it is the seal holding in on. It is proabably "welded" on from all the gunk, etc. The king quads brakes were the worse in the business. Once mine went out, I just never replaced them again. I don't think they ever worked worth a crap except for one I first time I bought it. Good luck on this!

    Default Got it off!

    Well after banging on the housing and the hub with a rubber mallot for a long time, I finally got angry and took two crow bars and pried between the hub and the housing. It popped right off! After that it was no problem to get to the drum and the brake guts. Unfortunately, before I got that far, I cracked the pot metal of the flange by prying between it and the housing with a big screw driver ( and I knew better too!). I cleaned the edge up good and used some epoxy to repair the crack. Hope it holds!

    Default What's next?

    Tie rod ends and front brakes are next. A few more CV boots and maybe some CVs and a few inside bearings are on the wish list.
