    Question Taxidermist

I've got a couple of fish I'm looking to get repros done on. I was wanting to get the general opinion of the group in regards to who they recommend. What I am looking for is someone who can do a "leopard rainbow" a large Situk Steelhead and a sockeye.

    Thoughts?

Mark Oslund! No question. http://rltaxidermy.com/ He is one of, if not the best that I have seen.

Mark Oslund of Real Life Taxidermy out of Anchorage. Simply the best that there is.

I have never had a fish mounted. when June or I get our hog we are going with Mark. I have seen his work and to many people suggest him. His rainbows mounts are just amazing.

another vote for Mark. He has the largest supply of rainbow and steelhead molds availble. Not to mention his king molds. If you caught it, he can match it. You won't find a better paint job on a more accurate body. 907-344-6805 Suzy will probably answer, Mark is usually at the shop working, she drives him pretty hard this time of year!

I have a char that was done by Mark Osland. It is OK. I think his specialty is salmon. For trout of grayling repros I would go with Eric Knowlton at reel trout studios. He did a rainbow and a grayling for a buddy... absolutley fabulous!

Woody, if there is something you are not happy with take it back to Mark, he will make the adjustments you want. I have seen his char and IMO, they are fabulous. Give him a call, I am sure he would be happy to talk about it with you.

Which species of "Char" did he do for you? Lake Trout, Bull Trout, Arctic Char, Brook Trout, or maybe was it a Dolly Varden?

I see a bunch of votes for Mark Oslund. I'd like to see if there is more of a market out there. Any other recommendations?

JMSS, I emailed twin rivers...I guess they didn't want my business. They never emailed back!

Charlie Livingston takes forever doesnt he? JMSS has had a couple fish done by him and he says it took over a year almost 18 months. I'm not down with that.

That's because he is a 4 time state champion and he also has my vote. Take a drive to sportsmans in anchorage go back to the fishing section and look up on the wall 90% of the fish on that wall are ones he did, He currently has my salmon shark jaws and tail he is doing and I can't wait til he's done

Mark also won the National Championship in 2000 with a grayling in the Cold Water Reproduction category. IMO, the only reason he only has 4 State Championships is those are the only ones he as entered (that I know of). He hasn't put a fish in competition in quite a while.

Maybe??? I dunno... I had a king done a few years ago and it took 3 months, but i can see how waiting for longer makes it a no-go

For the steelhead ... two guys that you might want to look at:

    Luke Filmer at www.blackwatertrading.com

    and Dave Campbell at http://home.att.net/~drcgnw/home.htm

ever think you might want to do your own? i'm starting that process now. check out http://www.jgreplicas.com/Products2.html . you figure $200 for the replica, $150 for an airbrush, $100 for different paint and pigments your still looking at less than $500 and good luck finding a place that will do it for less and turn a good product. i've done alot of research into taxidermists and by far the best i've seen for steelhead is a place online http://www.blackwatertrading.com/site/home.html , which by the way uses some of the JG replicas, and the price quote they gave me was nearly two grand for a steelhead. thats what got me started. taxidermy.net is a good place to go for info as well. lots of tutorials. good luck.

I have no desire to do it on my own, unfortunately. I wouldn't be able to anyway, given the fact that I'm in Iraq. I appriciate all of the info so far.
