Kupe and Kuiu and black bears only. Next set of islands to the north (Chichagof and Admiralty) are brown bears only.

I'm sure there are a few wolves on Kupe.

    Well, I'll be . . .

Regs say Unit 3 has an open Brown Bear season. Could be a mixture - that's usually pretty rare for the islands, but not uncommon on the mainland.

Maybe they swim over from the mainland? I know the moose are moving onto Kupe.

Kupreanof is mostly black bears. It is possible to find a brownie but 99.99% will be black. Several brownies have taken up residence on Mitkof Island. There are wolves on all three islands (Mitkof, Kupreanof and Kuiu). Hunting is pretty good on all three for bears. Jim

I am guessing no, since I recall a recent study stating kuiu's bear density (4/sq mile) as being the highest, or among the highest ever recorded (on the planet?); the study results are (or used to be) posted somewhere on this website.

Despite that, I was on Kuiu for a week fishing a few yrs ago and never saw a bear.

Kup is easier accessed, and has populations of people.

    Kuiu is a wilderness island.

I would guess more bears on Kuiu.

I shot a wolf on Kup last fall.
