Michael Strahan;401564]Okay I thought a series on gear would be nice... I'm going to call it "if money were no object". In other words, if you could afford the "best", what would you get? I'd like to do this with some of the things we've talked about before, and then collate the data for folks who are looking to rent or purchase gear for Alaska. yes, I know we've worn some of these discussions out, but we get new folks in here alla time... so it's for their benefit. It could be something we can keep in its own forum too, perhaps.
    Here are the categories:

    1. Large tents-no intrest
    2. Mountaineering tents-Hilleberg
    3. Packs-for hunting barneys, for general backpacking-gregory
    4. Hiking boots-Scarpa
    5. Jackets-Arcteryx
    6. Raingear-Arcteryx
    7. Hip boots / waders-Simms
    8. Sleeping bags-Western Mountainering
    9. Sleeping pads-Thermorest neo air
    10. Large water filters No intrest
    11. Small water filters-Katydn hiker pro
    12. Headlamps-Black diamond
    13. Backpacking stoves-for small trips-MSR-pocket rocket, For winter and long trips MSR whisperlight
    14. Campstoves
    15. Knives-Havalon for backpacking and hunting
    16. Trekking poles-blackdiamond carbon fiber
    17. Inflatable canoes
    18. Large rafts / catarafts

My plan is to get a list of your top choice in each category (we'll do a separate thread on each one, so don't list the gear in this thread!) and then do a poll for the top ten in each category (if we get that many). We will list the final "winners" in each category as the "forum users choice". Feel free to post your reasons for the ones you recommend, too. We might include that in the final writeup.

I know a lot of this is personal preference, but the point is to say that if you could afford what you consider to be "the best", what would it be, and why?

Can you think of other items that should be on the list?

    -Mike
