Default What do you guys do?

I live in Los Angeles, I love going to Alaska, and always joke with my wife about moving up there. All of you that live up there, what do you do for a living?

I am envious. I like the concept of working to live, not living to work. Here in L.A. we are consumed with our jobs, and not life. I enjoy my work , but sometimes....

    Default Many opportunities

    Bill,

I think that you would find most opportunities avialable in Alaska. The largest employers, however are the local governments, hospitals, oil/petroleum/industry, and fisheries (commercial/sport) and tourism based.

Visiting Alaska is a dream for many.... living in Alaska is a nightmare for some. We are at -23 degrees today... that's a bit chilly, but not untolerable for those who truly love to live here.

    Cheers

My goal is to get a summertime cabin up there when I retire. The problem is figuring out where in Alaska to get it.

I work for the USAF as a financial manager as my primary job. On the side, I own a few properties in Anchorage and rent them out to mostly military folks out of Ft Rich and Elmendorf AFB. You'll find that the military holds a large part of the local economy up here, so depending on what you do for a living, there may be a contract or government position opportunity available to you. Job security is key in this economy. If the government ever has to start laying off its military and employees, our jobs will probably be the last thing we will be worried about.

    Yep, I have heard that.
All the summer time cabins are gone.
But I have also heard there are plenty of winter time cabins available though.
