Default Deshka Landing Trails Report 12/12/08

    Date:

    12/12/08

    Reported By:

Susan J. used the User Trails Report to submit their first hand experience on the trails. She is now eligible to win a new DLOA fleece jacket!
Larry H. updated the conditions and trail markings.

    Temperatures:

High temps in the 30's for the last Wednesday-Sunday has made some hazards out on the rivers. Highs were in the low 20's on Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday. It didn't make it past 10 degrees Thursday. It was -5 at 8:00 am Friday morning.
    Weather History

Snow Depth At Landing Parking Lot:

Almost 5" of new snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.
All of the parking lot has been plowed.

    Trail Conditions:

    12/12
With the cold temperatures most of the overflow has frozen up and the new snow has covered up a lot of it. Conditions have improved in the past 2 days.

    12/11
Larry has staked down to Scary Tree from the Landing. He has marked a route as best he can to avoid most hazards, however, this will not be the trail for the winter. When conditions improve he will be able to straighten out areas and have a smoother run. It is currently a very tough stretch if you want to pull a load due to dips, curves, and general hazards. Pulling a heavy load is not suggested until the snow gets packed down. He dragged it both ways today.

    Lodge Reports:

Alaska Backcountry Tours- Susitna to Kroto Slough to GCI Trail to Yentna Station.
Trail was good on 12/6/08. On your way back to the landing, be sure to stay away from the bluff on the right about 1 1/2 miles up river from the mouth of the Deshka. There has been traffic running along that bluff recently which takes you pretty close to the open lead there. The recent warm weather has made this area weaker. Follow the "LSDA" markers and you will be on the right trail.

    McDougall Lodge

Talvista Lodge- Snow conditions: currently have 4 feet of packed snow

Trails: From Skwentna to TalVista Lodge the trails have been marked, but signs have not been posted yet. Due to warm temperatures last week, our trail is icy and bumpy.

The TalVista Lodge has food, fuel and lodging available. Please call Chris or Sarah @ the lodge for reservations 733-3066

Default Trail to Deshka River in Great Shape

Bob L. called in at 5:15pm Friday night to report that the trail down to the Deshka River is in great shape, currently in the best condition of the season. The cold temps and snow cover have really helped out.

Thank you for the reports, thanks to Larry for the grooming, and please post a note with the address of the LSDA to send my annual contribution to. I really appreciate those reflective stakes when those ground storms blow through.

And I saw there's a donation box at the Deshka Landing service counter, too.

I was there today. -20* when we left and a balmy -14* when we got back. That's up top at the gate. We all know it's somewhat colder on the river! The temporary trail to Scary Tree is nicer than I would have guessed. The trail from the confluence of the Willow Channel and the mainstream Su to Kroto has some choppy bumps from the ice formation but above and below that stretch is excellent. Good job Larry. Thanks again for making it safe.

The Flathorn Lake to Scary tree trail is also well set and marked. No issues to be concerned with other than the cold.

    Thumbs up LSDA Donations

If anyone is sending in a donation to DLOA for LSDA, please make sure to mark the check for LSDA. Sending a small note of appreciation will go a long way with the guys working the trails. Larry placed a locked donation box on our counter, and he is the only one with the key.
