Thumbs down If you have enjoyed Shrimping in PWS...

The commercial shrimp fishery has been closed in PWS since 1992. The Board of Fisheries has a proposal from the Department of Fish and Game on its December meeting agenda in Cordova. So there goes our good shrimping. The commercial fishery is what dropped the shrimp stocks before.

Unless you are new to the state, live under a rock, or are otherwise informationally isolated, you would think that the Exxon disaster caused shrimp stocks - and pretty much everything else - to decline in PWS.

    Just sayin'.

I'd bet that there are more pots fishing & pots lost in the sound now than there ever were when there was a commercial fishery. Think about it ??? just about every boat in whittier and i'd bet in valdez has pots on it. F&G gets rid of the permits that at least gave them a idea of what was being caught so now they have NO IDEA of how many shrimp are being caught out there.
If and when they open a commercial fishery i think its going to have a very small pot limit(i've heard 10 pots) and the seasons might be limited so as not to cross over into the sport season. If i read it right one of the proposals is that if your registered as a commercial pot fisherman you can't shrimp during the rec season and if your a rec shrimper you can't shrimp during the commercial season, guess that will get rid of the double dippers . I think there is room for both fisheries if cool heads prevail and a lot of thought goes into it (but that ain't how the board works IMHO ). Its going to be interesting to see what shakes out from it.

This is not true. There is commercial shrimping in the sound and done on a quota system in the areas that are open. The one boat in Valdez that shrimps sells them on the docks every summer. They were not out much last year as they hung their gear up on something and lost the entire rig. So they were down for quite a few weeks.

Default additional information on proposal 44

ADFG has put out their comments on the proposals for the Cordova meeting, including the proposals dealing with re-opening the commercial shrimp pot fishery. In their comments on proposal 44, they suggest some regulations about how a fishery could be managed. They state that they're still evaluating harvest strategy and guideline harvest levels, but they do speak to potential areas...and suggest two areas be opened on an alternating even/odd year basis. They describe those areas by their stat number (link to stat area maps also provided below)...but basically it would allow the commercial pot fishery in odd years in the Unakwik/Glacier Island/north Naked Island area. In even years, the fishery would be in the Knight Island/Icy Bay areas.
