we were driving down from anchorage yesterday and up in turnagain pass saw looked to be a roadkill "not grouse". whipped a u-turn and as i came around I.D.ed it as a hawk owl. when i picked it up it was not only warm, but alive!
it had some blood on the beak, but didn't seem to have any fractures. we wrapped it in a jacket and stopped at kenai lake and got a box. as we headed home it started to try to get out of the box, so we had high hopes. i made a couple calls and arranged to drop it with a master falconer who works with rehabbing raptors.
when we got to his house we transferred it to another box, and saw that the right eye was closed, and there seemed to be some drainage below it. maybe a concussion, but possibly it has lost the eye.
my son just called to check on it, and it is doing fine so far, but has still not opened the eye.
we will go and visit it and i will try to get a couple pics.
