    Default Comm. shrimping??

Is it true fish&game board is having a meeting about comm. shrimping in PWS ? Any rumors out there? We know its coming, just don't know when. Last summer was the best shrimping I've seen in the last several years. Sure would hate to see it come to an end.

theres been a small commercial shrimp fishery in PWS for a long time now... I believe they are just changing some regulations.
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

    Default not just changing regs....

there is a proposal to open a commercial pot shrimp fishery in the sound. i believe at least one of the proposals originates with the cordova fishermens association.
one of the harvest guidelines would allow for a commercial take approximately 2x the current sport harvest, but as with all proposals there will be lots of juggling population estimates and proposed seasons, pot numbers, etc. before anything is made law.

Its a drag(trawl) fishery not a pot fishery.

The Trawl fishery for shrimp in PWS has been limited to Sidestripe shrimp only
in Port Well and Wells Passage with a limit of 59,500 pounds for the 2008 fishery.

Don’t confuse this small fishery with a full blown spot shrimp fishery.

i'll be rigged & ready to go, i figure 800-1000 pots for me to fish should be just enough.

    Dewey,
I've always said i don't want to be a gold miner all i want to be is the guy that sells the miners the picks, shovels and mules !!!
I think if they do open a pot fishery its going to be with a very limited number of pots per boat and they are trying to not have the commercial season open at the same time as the sport fishery. Check out all the proposals its a lot to read. Now i've got to figure out how to get a lobstah boat here in time for the fishery???

To suggest that this is a "new" fishery isn't exactly correct. There was a commercial pot fishery out in PWS until 1989. I'm not sure if the two are directly related, but after the oil spill the fishery was shut down and hasn't been reopened since. I grew up helping my parents run 100+ pots per day in the Sound. It was a sustainable fishery, and can be once again. I understand that some sport/personal use fishermen may not be thrilled about this prospect, but this isn't exactly a new fishery being created to take the shrimp from the sport fishermen. If anything, it is just restarting a fishery that already existed for a long time for a resource that is plentiful enough to support both user groups.

The wife and I have talked about this in the past. If we could catch enough to just pay the bills, it might be a fun excuse to spend the summer on the Sound.

One of the proposals is for the commercial season to run from april 1 to may 12 and again sept 4 to dec 15. Require exclusive registration such that commercial pot shrimp vessels registered for PWS may not participate in the PWS sport harvest. Create sport fish exclusive zones near pots. So no summer season. I count at least 13 proposals for the shrimp pot fishery.
