    Default M1 garand loads

I got an M1 Garand recently (30-06 version) and I was wondering if anyone has some pet hand loads to try?
    Thanks,

    Default M1 loads

150 gr. flat base bullet, 4895, 4064, or Varget to give 2650-2700 fps.
175 gr. Matchkings with the same powders to give 2500 fps.
Go with slower powders, try to hot rod the 150's up to higher pressures, and you'll start bending operating rods, cracking bolt lugs, ..... them parts are getting more expensive and harder to find.
If your bore is worn, especially at the throat or the muzzle, accuracy will likely be mediocre at very best. See how it shoots, but if the barrel is questionable, no amount of experimentation with bedding or load work will make it more accurate. At the moment, CMP has a pretty good deal on new Criterion barrels (made by Krieger).
Oh, and as long as CMP keeps selling the Greek HXP M2 ball at around .27-.35 cents a round, it's getting close to being non-cost-effective to try and load for it, and the stuff I've shot performs as well or better than a lot of the old National Match white box ammunition I have on hand.....

    Default M2 Ball Ammo

The M1 prefers a medium burn rate powder. To duplicate M2 ball, I use LC Brass, 47.5 gr. of IMR 4895, CCI primers and 150 gr. Hornady bullets. Please verify and work up your loads accordingly. I went to this recipe after shooting up most of my 50's era CMP ammo

CMP (what used to be the old DCM) is still a Congressionally chartered government entity whose purpose is to promote rifle practice, especially youth. Sales of M1's, Carbines, .22 rifles, air rifles, targets, equipment, all go to youth training programsand operating expenses. Employees are GS civil service employees, and volunteers. No one ends up with money in their pockets from these sales.

There's an awful lot of information available at this forum, as well as at the jouster forum.
Good luck with your new M1, and enjoy!!!! I'd wager that before long, you'll be shopping for clips, slings, bayonets, more rifles, more ammunition, more information.......and Wyatt's loads are spot-on! Tough to go wrong with his load!
