    Default Tip-up bait

This will be my first year hard water fishing in AK. I can't freakin wait. Just wondering what to go with on the tip-ups. I have a good feeling that frozen herring will work well, but was wondering if it is legal to catch small trout and put them on the tip-up. I know it was legal back home as long as the bait fish were caught out of the same body of water. Thoughts? Comments?

I don't think you can use sport fish for bait, and I am pretty sure you can't use live bait ether. Check out the means and methods part of the regs.

    Default Don't do it!

You can use DEAD herring and shrimp. Neither sport fish, nor live bait of any kind (except maybe worms) may be used... and I'm not even that sure about the worms.

herring, shrimp raw or cooked, whitefish, sucker meat, any guts or belly meat off what you catch and keep should get you started.

Wasting of fish: The intentional waste or destruction of any species of sport-caught fish is prohibited. However, whitefish, herring, and other species for which bag limits, seasons, or other regulatory methods and means are not provided in 5 AAC 47 - 5 AAC 75 (area-specific regulations), as well as the head, tail, fins, and viscera of legally taken sport fish, may be used for bait or other purposes.

edible meat of sport caught game fish cannot be used for bait but you can use as stated above. you can also use any part of a commercialy caught and sold fish.

What do you plan to fish for with your tip ups? Lakers, pike or Burbot? Herring or hooligan works good. Remember bigger the bait, bigger the fish especially with pike.
