    Default Haul Road Moose

Just wondering if anyone has been seeing any moose north of Atigun. I drew a moose tag in DM996 and hope to find one while I'm caribou hunting this year.

North of Atigun? Not likely. There is very little if any browse suitable for moose north of the pass. I could be mistaken, but my impression is that most (all?) of the moose hunting takes place south of the pass.

Global warming is bringing more and more willow growth to Alaska'a north slope. All 3 sub units of GMU 26 have moose seasons. That is because there are moose there.
Moose will be found wherever there is browse.
While your scanning the tundra with binoc's for bou, check the rivers and smaller drainages for moose.

Interesting. I knew that moose were migrating north along with willow and other browse, but I didn't see anything that looked particularly "moosey" on my trip up there. Learn something new every day...

Yeah jee whiz a moose was the first critter I saw at pump station 2 or 3 i cant remember. I was hunting ptarmigan along the willow edges there and i saw what i thought was a lone muskox untill it worked its way to within 200 yards or so. It was a big ole bull too!

2 years ago when we were flying into sheep camp low and behold there was a bull walking down the river. Looked legal too.

Saw a real nice (60ish") bull between pumps 2 and 3 last time we were up there. He was tailing a cow at about 1/4 mile. Cool stuff

They're certainly up there, just takes alot of looking.

Yep, seen 'em. Found sheds too.
Pump Station 3 there is a creek that runs on the west side of the pipeline. Lot's of brush.
Not many - and I haven't seen any bigguns.

    Good luck!

You will have to pack the meat back out 5 miles. Or are you flying in somewhere up there?

I am bowhunting, so I hope to find one relatively close to the road, or up one of the rivers we will be hunting via boat.

The 26B Moose hunt was opened back up a couple of years ago as a draw after about a 10 year closure.

Hunt the creek bottoms (some are deep enough to hide moose from road hunters hint hint) wherever you see willows.

The attached pics are of moose north of Atigun

Thanks for the pics Eric. Looks like that's somewhere around mile 70ish? Are they recent from this year?
