Where can I find more information? What is the age range for this event. Would it be "kid" enough for the 4 year old grandkids? They have started fishing and love it. No salmon yet, just the little stockers from the lakes.

its all kids from 1-16 years old.
you can contact "Montana Creek Campground" for more information.

itll be like shootin pinks in a barrel, real easy and a great way to introduce the young ones to fishing.

    just got this today...

The second annual Big Lake Aurora Lions Humpy Derby will be held at Montana Creek next weekend beginning Saturday, August 9 at 6:00 am and ending Sunday, August 10 at 3:00 pm. The entry fee is $15.00. 100% of the money raised goes to CampAbilities, a summer camp for blind children.

This year we will have three age groups:
    3 - 7
    8 - 11
    12 - 15

The winner in each age group will receive a bike and the largest humpy caught during the derby will be mounted by Harter's Taxidermy of Fairbanks. Sunday afternoon there will also be a drawing for a bike. EVERY child entered will receive a prize.

Gather the kids, grab your fishing poles and come on out for a fun filled weekend of fishing while helping out a great cause!

    See you on the banks!

    Question

My 11 year old son and I are flying to Anchorage from Billings Montana next Saturday the 9th, we are taking the train on Sunday the 10th to Talkeetna and staying at the Susitna River Lodge until Tuesday when we have a guided trip with Mat-Su Expeditions.

We are going to miss the Humpy Derby

If I am looking at the map correctly Montana Creek Campground is not too far from Talkeetna - We do not have anything to do on Monday the 11th, It would be awesome for me and my boy to try to catch a Humpy (there still might be one or two left after the Derby )

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way we could get a ride to the campground? I sure could come up with some gas/taxi money.

We don't plan on keeping any of the fish we catch so I would be more than willing to give them to someone who wanted them, or I will put them back.

What do you use to catch Humpys on in Montana Creek? Will the typical pink/white FST's or spoons/spinners work?

    Thanks in advance.

Anyone have a report on Pinks and other Salmon from MT Creek? Would like to get the kids there this weekend, but looking for a decent report.

    Thanks

I will try and be decent...I fished with a friend this weekend. We caught lots of chums, a few pinks, and 1 silver. not fishing the mouth. We were about 75 yards south of the train tracks. Water was clear and we were fly fishing with purple ESL's. I hooked 3 silvers and did not land any with my 5wt. My friend was using an 8wt, hooked 2 silvers and landed 1. A few people passing by asked what we were using, so we shared.

Lots of chums average size around 10 lbs. Caught only 2 pinks and my buddy caught 4 or 5...saw lots of fish. I will be posting a report soon with pics.

Looked like everyone coming up from the mouth had at least 1 silver in tow. Not sure how long they fished for it?

The silvers are in and people are getting their limits in no time! Humpies and dogs are clogging the creek and the trout are having a party with all the salmon around.

The forecast for this weekend is partly cloudy with a high chance of fish on. Come out for the Humpy Derby - watch your kids get their limit on Pinks while you get your limit of Silvers!

There are two weekends left before school resumes so quit wishing, go fishing!
