Talking Where to find 60,000+ reds?

Word is that 68,000 reds have entered the lower Kenai. Grab your dip net and head down there or be with me and thousands of others on the upper Kenai in about 10 days!

Are they early this year? I will be in Soldotna on the 28th. Do you think I will be too late? The runs usually last what..? 2 1/2 weeks??

You'll be fine, josh. There will still be fish available, and if the peak has passed you'll still likely find excellent fishing by heading to the upper river.

by "upper river" do you mean the Russian? I will be in Soldotna, I usually fish around the airport. Have not been for a while. Last time I had to head home early due to a sinker hitting me in the eye after a nice red threw my hook. Cataract surgery and 3 years later I am ready for some revenge.

Not necessarily the Russian itself, but up in that direction. Anywhere from Jim's Landing upstream should be rockin' around then.

Can a guy without waders and on foot hope to dipnet a few? I don't need a whole limit, hell even three or four would be great.

You have to have a current fishing license, and get a dipnetting permit (free, get at Wal-Mart, etc.), AND you must be an Alaska resident. I'm not sure how it works if you're military.

judging by the numbers so far when do you guys estimate the "peak" for the middle kenai to be? I know that it's not that simple but any estimate would be nice. thanks,

A decent guess is it takes ten days for fish to go from the sonar to the russian.

    Hope that helps.

So in 8 to 10 days I would still be able to catch some fish?

    Hit the Russian.
It will be impossible not to catch fish in 8-10 days.
Unless you are fishing with no hook!!!
Even then you will probably still catch fish!!!

How do you all think the Russian will be around the weekend of August 9? I can't make it down there this weekend and will be out of town for a while after that so the weekend of the 9th is the next time I can get down there ... will there still be fish or is the run pretty much over at that point?

Nah, the run lasts through aug. Sometims you have to pick through a lot of turned fish (very red) to get your limit. Later in the season there is a mixed bag of blushed reds, good reds, and silvers.

It really sucks to Have to catch 50 blushed reds to limit out!
