    Default 922 Moose Area

Has anyone hunted this area? Looking for some recommendations into the area or other thoughts. Realizing it is a draw and not looking for the honey holes just some information from folks who have hunted and have been succesful in this area. There won't be any time to scout at all prior to the hunt. I am very familar with North of Cold Foot (especially Atigun Pass and North) but never stepped out below Cold Foot, particlualy Slate Creek. I have been up Caribou hunting via vehicle for eight years straight prior to leaving the state last year. Any help on the Moose in that area would be greatly appreciated as I am in Washington state and will be coming up for the 922 hunt only as a Non-Resident. Thanks Mike

I hunted it two years ago and it was NOT a slam dunk. We had warm weather and the bulls didn't show up until after the 20th.

If I did this hunt as you are doing it, I'd camp on one of the forks of the Koyokuk or a good looking place north of there and STAY PUT. Resist the urge to ride the road.

Do NOT do any bull calling. These bulls know their neighbors well. Cow only calling and only after the 20th.

Make it a focused effort, not an effort to target the entire hunting area.

I figured most put in for the tag in hopes of seeing a decent bull while heading North for Caribou. Always wanted to hunt that area, but really never knew anyone that did it as a full hunt. And really never stopped to explore.... Marc, I like the methods that your suggested. Odds aren't good either on the F & G website, but someone has to get a good animal every now and then from the area... I ran into a few locals several years ago when we broke an axle spring on a pop up trailer. Anyhow waiting for the part we had time to explore. The locals have gotten some Monsters out of those areas. But their using Swamp type buggies... The guy that runs a mining operation out behind Cold Foot had some serious racks on his cabin.... I doubt if he went somewhere else. Due to time restrictions, I'm probably limited to five or so days, hoping the weather turns cold and snows a bit right off the bat....
