    Default Things that don't mix...

Big ***** king coming to the boat...

    Fully loaded rod....

    6 oz sinker....

    4/0 salmon hook....

    Unsuspecting eyeball !!!

When the hook suddenly pulled free from the salmon's mouth, it came flying into the guy's eye under FULL LOAD.

Hook found a pretty solid purchase in the eye as it was strong enough for the flying 6 ounce lead to snap the 30# leader when it abruptly hit the end of the tether! Dude then pulled the hook from his own eye! Good thing it was barbless.

Are you feelin' the visual on this scenario?

    Moral of the story:

Never fish without your protective shades.

I don't know off hand where this took place, but why would 6oz. and barbless hooks be unusual? I fish barbless all the time for personal use when I know I'll have to shake a lot of pinks to get to a nice coho or like this week when the chums are all over and I'm looking for one of the last blushed kings lurking about... 6oz. is plenty if you're mooching in fairly still water, and we caught quite a few nice kings trolling near the surface the other day.

If the one of the most obvious merits of fishing barbless hasn't revealed itself in this tale, then by all means keep fishing those barbs!

Just so the take-home message is loud and clear:
