Thread: If you were limited to 5 flies, which ones?

  1. #1

Default If you were limited to 5 flies, which ones?

If you could only have 5 flies to cover most of Alaska flyfishing from Kings to Rainbows which would they be? Please include colors and sizes too.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Plus a big bead eyed pink bunny leech, they work great for silvers and pinks

I like all of the above, but I always like to have a few dry flies along, elkhair caddis, black gnat, mosquito, and some terrestrials.

A piece of glo yarn tied to the right sized hook. Have hooked many kings, silvers and sockeyes on this yarn. Also have picked up more than my share of rainbows running up t0 15 pounds on these. I think most flies hook fishermans wallets, lol

Half the fun of fly fishing is tying the fly.

I could use a milsurp 30-06 for all my hunting too but what fun is that.

I fish very few patterns as it is, so I think I would pick...

A Dolly Lama and 4 beads.

Default OK 5 can't cut it, it really depends on the fishing

Here are my suggestions based upon the water I've fished listed below.
-- Russian River early run Sockeye
    -- West Cook Inlet Chinook
    -- Russian Rainbows in June
    -- Lil' Susitna Silvers
-- Lil' Susitna Chums and Pinks

    Sockeye Fishing:
3 coho flies (Size2 for the Russian River)
2 gamakatsu octopus hooks tied with yarn (Size 3/0 for non-russian river fishing)

    Kings:
    1 Chartreuse/Green bunny leach (Size 2/0)
1 Gamakatsu Octopus tied with chartreuse yarn (size 4/0)
1 Fire Orange Alaskabou (Size 2/0)
1 Purple Egg Sucking Leach (Size 2/0)
1 Pink Fat Freddy (Size 3/0 or 4/0)

    Silvers:
    1 Flash Fly (Size 2)
2 Articulated Bunny Leaches, pink and purple (Size 1/0)
2 Gamakatsu egg hooks, salmon roe and bobber!! (yes, roe for the fly rod where legal -- size 1/0)

    Rainbows:
2 Bead Head Rabbit Ear Nymphs (Russian River opener pattern; size 12)
    1 Bead
1 Egg Sucking Leach (Size 2)
1 Drab Pink Flesh Fly (Size 6)

Chums and Humpies: same as silver flies
