Default Best Mountain Bike Under $500

I'm looking at replacing my crusty old mountain bike. Which mountain bikes do you guys like under 500 bucks. I realize I won't be getting anywhere near top of the line, but just something that'll work and carry me across dry ATV trails and a little gravel road riding. But don't want it to fall apart instantly and the gear changer to quit being able to shift to certain gears after a while. Is there such a bike?

    Thanks for the input

    Shocks!! Pegs!! LUCKY!!
Are you going to take it off some sweet jumps? (example of picture below)

    Back on track...

    Giant Rincon ~400 bones

    Kona Fire Mountain ~450 bones

    Trek 4300

I'm guessing its just like sleds and wheelers. Everyone has their favorite and begin the brand wars. Also like sleds and wheelers, when you really look at it, they are ALL very nice and work well with tons of bells/whistles.

After doing some reading, many people recommend the Giant (first one pictured)

But yes, under 500 bucks!! Over that and you have to ask where the motor mounts are!

Well they are bought and paid for after a TON of research and reviews.

I bought this bike for myself:

    My wife got this bike:

Seem to be pretty good bang for the buck. We'll see how they ride.

We bought my wife the exact same bike last year, and so far she is really happy with it. Enjoy! If you ever want to get out and do some riding, let me know.

Sometimes the dealers will have last years higher models on the floor with a nice mark down, that would put them in your price range. Worth checking out.

Thanks Brian will do. We are supposed to get them into REI around July 4th. So we'll need a good break in ride. We'll keep in touch.

    Default Break-in

Motor break-in is very important. Do it with care so as to not damage any parts. Have fun.

Adam, for under $200 I would watch Craigslist very closely. Buy a bike that is 2-3 years old. That way you can get a bike that has the quality components of a $5-600 for a fraction of the cost.

    Default Thanks Brian

I have been doing that for the last week or so but I have decided to upgrade my existing bike for the time being.
