    Default sheefish around fairbanks

Is there any places to catch sheefish around fairbanks? i am reading and most of the posts say to go up north. I was told there are some in the chena. Anybody know anything about the sheefish in this area?

I caught one in the Chena (I'd guess 20-25lbs) while fishing for kings and saw a couple smaller ones caught while pike fishing in Minto Flats. I think they are a bit rare to specifically target them, but a lot of fun if you do happen to hook up with one. I thought the taste was pretty bland, so if I ever catch another, it'll be released.

    Question Whereabouts

Roadkill, whereabouts in Minto did you see them. I always thought they held pretty deep so I was wondering how you saw them? Were they at the end of your line? Also, what time of year? As I understand it those things move like crazy throughout the summer.

About this time of year a good number of sheefish migrate up the Chatanika. A couple of years ago I happened to be fishing for pike at the confluence of the Tatalina and Chatanika when they came through and it was a hell of a lot of fun. The run lasted for about 6 hours and between 4 of us we easily had 100 strikes maybe 50 hook ups and landed maybe 20, we only kept 3 of them and those were the first 3, we would have released those as well if we had realized what was going on.

Friends caught them while fishing for pike, a couple were at the confluence of Goldstream Cr and the Chatanika, and a couple were out in the flats, probably in 5 or 6 feet of water. I don't recall the time of year, I imagine July-August since that's when I made most of my trips to Minto.

The one on the Chena was sometime in July, caught on a gold Mag Wart while anchored off for kings.
