Gulkana River fishing report needed.
Looking for any news on the Gulkana.
Came off river 10 June after 4-days with Blue Moose Rafting: 2 guides and family of 3. Two round rafts; 13 and 14 ft. Paxson Lake to Sourdough.
Conditions: Ice out was June 1, we were told by Kathy, the BLM camp host at Sourdough. Paxson Lake clear and only scattered remnant ice along banks. On river, we had intermittent rain daily, hail on day 2, but excellent spring trip with good water levels - only one drag. We saw no other rafts and only one other boat (few miles above Sourdough).
Fishing: I'd read that Gulkana Grayling turn on and off mysteriously after good rains. Yep. A few whitefish at lake outlet on day one. Fish turned on on day 3. Many Grayling, to 14", caught on #12 copper johns, then black wooly bugger type flies to #6. No luck on smolt patterns though plenty of smolt in the water. One hefty 18" Rainbow on black wooly bugger. No luck with dry patterns. We saw one King caught by a charter below the bluff/outhouse campsite - not sure they boated it as they drifted downriver out of view.
Camping: Early season banks were very clean; none of the TP and worse we saw during July trip last year. For all the traffic this river gets, it's amazingly pristine. Excellent info on BLM website to guide low impact camping and finding recommended campsites. Great facilty at Sourdough for dumping portable waste containers too.
We had a great early season trip- and best of all, my wife (her first trip) loved rafting.
