I've had good luck with aerosol brake pad cleaner from the auto store. Costs about $4 for a big can of it last time I bought. Seems to be a solvent for just about any gunk, and plenty of volume for flushing. As for what to spray it with, I avoid anything that leaves a wet film like WD40. Pick an aerosol lube that says it leaves a dry film and you should be set.

Brake pad cleaner strips the oil completely out of the metal.

    Kevin,

After pulling the action away from the stock, I spray it down good with Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber or like gun cleaning solvent. That dries up fast and clean. Then I spray it with aerosol synthetic gun oil. Last, I run out to the garage and blow off the excess with the air compressor. Low air pressure will leave enough on to keep the metal protected.

    Hope this helps.......Al
