Default Any Reds on the Kenai yet?

Does anybody have any info on any reds heading up the Kenai yet? With Kings so slow, I am starting to wonder if the reds are going to be late too.

    Default Ain't heard yet...

But I'm guessing they will be a little late. With the water reports being low and off color, along with the clouds/lack of warmth I wouldn't be surprised for them to show up to a week or so late.

Reds have been spotted in the Russian as early as Memoral Day weekend.

The bulk of the fish start arriving the second week in June, and by Father's Day, it's typically lights out.

Considering it takes 7-10 days for a bolus of fish entering the Kenai to swim all the way to the Russian sanctuary, the first push of those fish should be showing in the lower Kenai any day now.

This is exactly true but... I have been keeping records on the runs for over 20 years now and with the late summer (if it's really even here yet) and the cooler temperatures, I too think the reds will be a week or 2 late this year. With that said... Everytime I think I have the fish figured out they throw a curve ball and do someting totally out of the norm! According to my precise calculations, they will be here when they get here. How's that for an exact science?

Those things are around til you head home and into September.
Hopefully they all kick the bucket the last week of August, cause those greenheads are a pain when you're trying to catch bows and dollys.

    Hey Drifter,

At least if you use that grenade at the mouth, its good chumming for your halibut surf casting

I have also received reports and seen some sockeye on the lower. I know of a couple caught yesterday June 4.

    Default Some are already here...

Had some time to scout for reds yesterday (June 3rd). There were a few jumping at the confluence of Moose and Kenai. Walked the Russian from Grayling to the mouth and spotted at least a dozen silvery/blue, white-tailed sockeye moving upstream among the spawning rainbows. Lots of water in the Russian this year which should expedite the early fish to enter the Russian proper sooner instead of holding at the sanctuary as is the case when water levels are low. The fish I saw were swimming at a really good clip and not stopping for more than a minute in any of the holes. If the bulk of the run is late or on time this year is anyone's guess but we will see come next week...

Camping at the Russian sounds like a really good idea. I am dying to catch some salmon, and since the kings are dissapointing, I guess I will have to get my fix on reds.
