Thread: jet unit issue

    Default jet unit issue

Older 50 hp Evinrude with jet unit is leaking (spraying) water from mating surface between shaft of outboard and body of lower unit. Haven't really noticed this in the past. Pulled the lower unit off and did not notice anything amiss. Cleaned it all up, bolted it back up and still puking water out. Other than that, engine runs great and boat is pushing along like normal and have good water flow out pee hole. Any ideas?

    Default normal

that is normal happens on all jet pumps that are a few hours old.

My 40 HP Yamaha does this too. Always has. Almost seems like it is just an over pressure escape or something.

Thanks for the replies. I just hadn't noticed it in the past I guess.

250 does the same. Best investment is a water pressure gage.

I would check the bolts that mount the jet mount plate to the outboard. I have had these back out a couple of times. Seeing 2 out of 4 3/8" stainless bolts holding your jet unit on is not a good feeling when you are in the middle of nowhere. When you reassemble make sure you use new stainless lockwashers and permanent(blue?) locktite.
