Just back from our annual Spring jaunt seeking out the mighty halibut. Our first choice of boats couldn't sail, and kindly arranged transport aboard another company's boat. However that boat also ran into mechanical difficulties, so at the last minute we were refered to North Country Charters. We'd never experienced such a schizophrenic episode of musical-boats during our many visits to the 'spit, so our hopes for a successful day were anything but optimistic.
We shouldn't have worried.......
The folks at North Country were pleasant and helpful, and immediately introduced us to Rich Baltzer, owner/operator of the "Obsession". Captain Rich put us at ease right off the bat, and we were on our way to the fishing grounds in short order.
The weather was against us from the get-go, and despite winds, rain and turbulent currents that had just about everyone onboard providing low quality chum, Captain Rich, working as solo crew, put us on the fish while going above and beyond to try and make the suffering passengers as comfortable as was possible.
Lots of halibut in the 15-30 pound range, small cod, rock fish, and a few other creatures that I hadn't seen before and had/have no desire to play with in the future.
We brought home loads of first-quality fillets, made new friends (albeit, side-by-side leaning over the rails), and found a new boat/skipper that we'll gladly be fishing with again as the summer progresses.
North Country Charters, and particularly Rich Baltzer aboard the "Obsession", are a first rate group of folks and have genuinely earned our patronage in the future.
