Default Prince William Sound black bears

We are going to put our boat in at Whittier next weekend and are planning on doing some shrimping and looking for some bears. Anyone recommend how far away from whittier we should be? Some people said farther you go the more bears they see but I'm not sure how far we want to go. thanks

    Talking Tomorrow

Heading out there tomorrow and will be there for a couple of days. I will let you know what we see when I get back...I just hope the weather is favorable, a lot to ask sometimes in PWS.

    Default Oregon

You might try Oregon. As of Monday out of Valdez there were very few slopes with much snow loss. Look very high for dens and bears peeking out and southern slopes.

    Good luck. It is early.

I've hunted out of Whittier a number of times. I thik you may be too early but you never know. I've seen bears as close as 20 miinutes out of Whittier. I've also seen fewer bears since the tunnel opened and everyone goes out there. But to answer your question, its not how far although tere is some correlation, its where. South facing slopes and right at the beach below these slopes may be your only hope this time of the year. Good luck!

    Default Rain

It rained hard all last night. Some snow obviously melted but up at 2,000 there is more snow, that will melt soon.

Bring crampons as it might turn into a goat style hunt.

Default Black and Brown bears out around Valdez

I was out yesterday about ten miles from Valdez and ran across nice tracks. I've seen three different sets of tracks so far this year. I think the bears are coming out early. Should be a good season around here.

    Default Just returned from Whittier

Just got back from Whittier. The weather was good Wednesday and most of Thursday. It started raining pretty good Thursday evening and did not quit all night. Looked for bear sign, but did not see any. Did stumble upon a few shrimp though. First time dropping my pots, you talk about exitement when we pulled the first one and there were actually some shrimp in it. You'd a thought we had just won the lottery, gosh the simple pleasures in life.

Anyway, the water was good when we left nothing more than a couple of feet. We left earlier in the day because of what was supposed to be coming that way....too small a boat and not enough experience to chance it.

    Hope this helps ya.

We've got bears out in Cordova right now. Not sure about Whittier though. We killed a bear over there last fall that you could have seen from the ferry terminal. There were 13 bears on the mountain when we started climbing it. It's a nasty hill side, but it's loaded up with bears.

think I'm going out the weeknd of the 11th, for my first ever attempt at shrimping. I have a 16' Klamath so weather will determin how far out I go. Any suggestions for a first time shrimper?
