Thread: Big black bear track size?

  1. #1

Default Big black bear track size?

What size bear track would indicate a large black bear (on POW)?

I'm no expert, but I remember reading that you add 1" to the width of the track to get an rough figure for what the bear would square. ie, if the track is 5" wide, the bear would roughly square 6'. But i don't remember if it was the front or rear paw measurement.

Any track over 5'' is big....7' plus....a 5.5'' track will put you in the book 21'' or very close! the biggest I've seen is 6'' on more than one black bear.
    my wife's bear 21-4/16 pad was 5.75''

One of mine 7'10' skull 21-5/16 pad 5.5''

    Both bear from POW........

    Default general rule is.....

what I learned from a guide. For blacks measure across the front pad and add 2". For brown bear measure the front pad across and add 1". This should get you close to what the hide should square. Not sure how that relates to skull size. Just a general rule and of course doesn't always work out that way! My wife's 7' black last season had small feet for such a large bear.

Really? I've always gone for the "add one inch" rule.

Congratulations! Those are two awesome bears, they will easily score 6'5" to 7". Very nice!
