anyone know a good game butcher in the Fairbanks area?
I got two caribou last week I need dropped off somewhere to get processed... hoping to get some good sausage and steaks outta these animals...
also, know any good places to get caribou hides tanned and sealed?
Interior processors off of Davis Road. Im sure alot of people will recommend the extra miles for Delta Meats but I get mine done all the time at Interior and am very impressed. Why do you need the hide sealed ???
sorry. didnt mean sealed but rather fleshed out and preserved... I'd like to give the hide to my father as a retirement gift...
Gotcha...I havent done any hides in a long time. I used to drop them off at Dennis Taxidermy but he is now retired. I know he used to salt them all for a while then sent them to the tannery, not sure where. You should be able to drop it off at any taxidermist and have great results if your just looking to tan.
Check into tanned hides
You might want to just price tanned caribou hides and buy them instead of tanning yours.
I had a few hides tanned awhile back and was not happy with them for 3 reasons:
1. The cost (more expensive than if I would have just bought them in a store)
2. The shape of the finished hide (the ones you can buy in a store were evenly shapes
3. The hair began to fall out (usually not an issue with store-bought hides).
Maybe you won't face any of these problems but just a heads up...
I understand the "specialness" of having your own hides tanned and giving them as gifts but after my experience I highly doubt I would ever go that route again at least with a caribou hide--unless maybe the coloration on the caribou was unique.
Just my opinion...
Take it to Delta and they'll bring it back! Its cheaper and very high quality...
