Thread: Valdez Fly In

  1. #1

    Default Valdez Fly In

If anyone is flying to the Valdez May Day fly-in from Merrill Field and would not mind someone following them please let me know. I want to go and would feel a lot more comfortable following someone else who has been there before.

Usually I go, but I am already on floats hoping for an early thaw. The Fly-in in Vadez is not all that float friendly

If the wife lets me get out of some previous engagements than I might go. Im afraid it would be kinda like the blind leading the blind cause I have never been there either.

If the weather is good enough I'll be flying a 182 from Elmendorf to Valdez on Saturday morning departing about 8 - 830 am.

    Default valdez....?

Fly in on same weekend as Mothers Day ! Seems powers that be would look at calander before fixing a date? I too am thinking about going,
depends on what ideas are shared my way ( or what I'm told I'm doing)

If weather allows I just run over the top from my place (AK66)
it's only an hour (about 78 miles) when I cant get over knik glacier,
I go over George. If not over top ? Highway, which in it's self is fun.

If it looks like I'm going I will post same and if you guys want to go as flight of ( ##) great with me.......

Alex, what about L93, Robe Lake ?
by the way did Mark sell his cub?

    take care

His SC is still down at te airport so he must not have sold it yet.
How far is ROBE LAKE from the regular airport?

If my PA-11-90 was on wheels I would like to compete for landings and take-off distance. It takes a long while to get to Valdez from Homer at 75 mph. (with only 18 gallons onboard)

I envy you pilots with your own aircraft. I have to rent so i can't compete in anything. I think the poker run would be a great way for me to see new areaas but becasue I rent I can't land off airport or at a strip less than 2000' long.

Default as crow flys 180 miles to picnic

Alex, it's about four miles to main airport from lake..... can always catch a ride. as for the long ride over....view is nice and your only burning 5 gph.

tried to work a deal on marks cub but found alot of stuff that didnt look good and he wouldnt budge on the price enough to make it work for me.
did have some nice mods on it though.... as for the price of fuel I will fix the 100 hp cub I have now and enjoy the 5 gph savings.

did you get to feeling better? have your booth maned Ok? I was going to be out of town but now am staying for another weeks before heading out
so if you need a hand feel free to yell. Take Care

Cutting the distance by going straight over Prince William sound would be faster , but even on floats, being over open ocean at 75mph gives me the creeps. The last time I tried it, the wind kicked up when I was half way across. A nice 25 knot head wind knocked me down to 40mph ground speed.... as the gas not so slowly sinks in the only sight gauge.....

I think they re-sold me booth to the Moose and Goose folks. It will give me more time to heal before float-season kicks off.... Hopefully,,,,,, I have huge med bills to pay.

    Default 75 mph

I have a friend in town that built a kit plane a couple years back. He only goes about 75 mph and has been out to Montague with the plane deer hunting. He does the Narrows all the time.

I do not think Robe Lake is open yet. Still lots of snow around here.

Does anyone have two extra seats for passengers that could split costs? (fuel, oil, etc) I'm working on finishing up my private now and my brother is coming into town to visit from Georgia and we would love to tag along with someone. We both weigh about 160 so we shouldn't slow you down too much
