    Default Bear Judgement

Just a quick question on judgeing a black bear. When they say a blackies back at the top of the barrel is a 6 foot bear, are they talking about the barell on its side or the barrel standing on end. Thanks

If I recall correctly, which these days is debateable, Tim Peltier from Fish and Game stated in his brief during the bear bait clinic that if the barrel is on its side and the bear stands a foot or so above the barrel "its a shooter" in his words.

    Good luck.

Thats the reason why I posted this, a friend and I were both trying to remember what was said at the clinic. We could have also thought it was the barrel laying down but figured I would get other hunters thoughts and experiences on judgeing them. Thanks

    Default Black Bear judging

Big Bear judging technique I use:

A 55 Gal drum barrel on it's end is about 34 inches tall. If you have a bear that's as tall as the barrel he should square a little over twice that(6 Ft plus).

Some other rules of thumb are ears on the sides of the head

If the bear appears like he wouldn't fit into the barrel, he's over 300lbs
    A crease in the forehead
Walking front feet toe in with a swagger.
Rounded head, with no "Pointy" features
No neck, rounded from the shoulders to the head

Also the largest bears we've shot actually looked skinny so don't miss judge. A big bear is out of the den early, have burned off much of his fat while out wandering around without any good food source til they find your bait, and long legs translate to big squaring bears.

Hold 1/3 up from the bottom of the chest for a 30 yd blood trail and enjoy the excellent Black Bear Burger.

When your getting ready to climb almost all the way in the stand, look 35 yds behind your bait and see a big 'ol fat blob walking at you and say Holy S*%@, thats a big bear, other then that its about foot over the barrell laying down is a big bear. This is my buddies from last year...
