    Default Big Blacktail Buck

Here is a shot I took a couple years ago along the Oregon coast range near our cabin. Of course the picture was taken the day after deer season ended.

He stood there thirty feet from me for about five minutes before he bounded off. I'm heading back there this fall hot on his cold trail.

Oh yes, He will be mine!

    Default Great Shot

I've never had a deer mounted but this one would qualify as my first. Providing he entered my sights.
    Excellent photos.

Hmmmm, give away the secrete location of my happy huntin' grounds???

    Nice try!!!

Kidding, just kidding! Our cabin and five acres is located on the Old Smith River Road near the town of Drain. Nice area, lots of deer and all to ourselves. Wouldn't sell it for anything.

I got lucky that day, they usually don't stay around for a second shot. We call 'em Grey Ghosts. Nothing I enjoy more than hunting these guys in heavy brush on a rainy day ...a nice light drizzle. Man, I sure miss it! The grouse hunting is awesome along with a few quail. Can't wait to get back there this Fall with family and old friends.

I had a really nice 4x5 blacktail mounted back in 1984 ...chocolate rack, eye-guards and lots of junk at the base of the horns. I was fishing for steelhead on the Collawash river, a tiny river that flows into the Clackamas when this five point busted out of the brush and started making his way up river. Wading mostly, some swimming. I climbed fifty feet up to the old road and flagged down a fellow hunter, borrowed his rifle and took that buck home along with a couple of summer steelhead. I'll never forget it, one of those really good days! The Oregonian ran the story in the paper. My fifteen minutes of fame I guess.

I'll post a photo of it tonight here when I get home ...

The Tillamook Burn ...Great!. I spent a lot of time hunting elk and fishing for salmon and steelhead in that area. Fished the Kilches, Miami, Trask, Wilson rivers to name a few. I miss Winter steelhead fishing more then anything.

At one time or another I fished all those rivers, but spent most of my time on the Miami. That brings back memories.

I wonder if the Chums ever made a comeback on the Miami River. Great area!

Can't answer that, I left in '72. We used to get chums on a creek feeding the Miami. We called it East Fork, don't know if it had an official name or not and the last time I fished that creek was in the mid '60's.

    Default 4x5 Blacktail Deer

Here is a shot of the 4x5 I took back in 1984. I'm not a horn hunter, but I take them as they come along. Large Blacktail bucks like these are tough to come by. They are out there and from what I have read they usually move between the hours of 10pm and 4am. Usually you have to really work hard for them and get "lucky".
