    Default Southcentral AK Fishing 04/12-04/13

    Hows everyones winter doing?

Anyways i havnt been on here since last year and i havnt been fishing at all this winter. So ive heard people talking about fishing for trout in rivers. What rivers are currently doing good? Or if there is any lakes clear of ice for pike?

Im planning on going this weekend im willing to travel 2 hours in any direction of Fort Richardson. Please help me find some good spots . Anyway i wont be ice fishing just fly / spinning real. And if you could also let me know what they where biting on.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think you'll find any open water in lakes for pike. There is still 1-2' of ice on most lakes, according to the most recent reports I've read.

As for open rivers, consider the upper Kenai River. If you read the thread on the Kenai in the flyfishing forum you'll get an idea of what to expect. It doesn't sound hot, but there is a chance of hooking into a nice fish and at the very least you'll get to wet a line after a long winter.

Most of the creeks along the Parks Hwy are still covered pretty well, I'd give it at least a few more weeks before breaking out the fly tackle here.

So kenai is my only hope it seems. How about the rivers near Nilchek(sp?) and it self?. Also where at in kenai is good i know the area a little but not enough to drive directly to the spots.

Thanks for the replies thus far

Kasilof and Kenai are both viable choices right now... Artic conditions still exist due to shelf Ice. I wouldn't expect great fishing untill it warms up just little more... Won't be long now though!

Everything south of Kasilof (anchor etc) is closed until may.
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.
