Thread: One rifle for Alaska, which one?

Default One rifle for Alaska, which one?

If you had to choose one gun to hunt sheep, bear, moose, caribou, goat, etc. which would you choose. I was thinking of a 300WSM.

    Default 06

I'm a 30.06 man. Might be too much for some game and light for others. But the right bullet, bullet placement, and practice that gives you confidence in the gun and caliber is what counts. I'm not opposed to other calibers but I like the 06.

30.06, It has taken every big game animal on the planet and stood the test of time. Every gun at some point is compared to the .06.
It ain't about the # of pounds of meat we bring back, nor about how much we spent to go do it. Its about seeing what no one else sees.

The three answers are 338, 300, 30-06. These have been the three in every single thread discussing this subject (there has been DOZENS ) which is exactly why I went and got a 325 WSM

My favorite is 300 wm, with 180 grain Nosler Partition. I use it so much I wonder what I am doing with the others, but my motto is "you can't have too many guns". I guess that is what my wife thinks about shoes and clothes also.

Love my 300WSM but it would be a toss up with the 338WM, if I could only have one.

When bullet weight range and availibility is considered, i think the 338WM would be tough to beat. It's not that a 338 would be needed for all species, but i do consider it a good starting point when bigger bears are encountered.

Down to just one I would pick the 308 winchester.

I'd pick my 8mm Rem Mag . However, the .338 is the best of the ones we are discussing. If it wasn't for the big bears, the 30.06 would be the pick.

.338 can shoot big or small bullets. Both of which can reach out and touch something, can knock down big game at short distance and can buck the wind better than .300
