Thread: Turner Lake

Has anyone ever taken a skiff up the Taku, and over to Turner creek? From there you can hike into Turner Lake.

I'm thinking about taking my 16' skiff, but don't know if that would be too dangerous going up the Taku in a boat this size.

    Thanks for your help!

I went up Turner creek last summer and a 16' skiff would have made the trip easily....that particular day. I've also seen days when I'd hesitate taking a Coast Guard 47' MLB up Taku....the key here is that on a nice day, the skiff does fine. As quickly as Alaska weather can change, the small vessel operator will do well to keep a very close eye out and have plenty of contingency plans. The smaller/less seaworthy (in comparison) boats require even more prudence by mariners simply because they are more easily capsized or more likely to have falls overboard. Boat safe, boat smart and boat often!! Mike

Thanks for the information! I've flown into the lake the last two summers, but getting there by boat would be so much cheaper. This makes me feel alot better about taking my skiff there!

Pick a nice day and you'll be fine. It can get VERY snotty around Bishop, so be careful. Also watch out for rocks around the creek mouth/floodplain. The creek has a nice deep channel that you can motor up to the first falls and anchor up there.

I'm hoping to get out there this summer too. Beautiful lake.
