Default Alaska hunting advice--in one sentence...

I thought this might be an interesting thread for those planning their first Alaskan adventure--resident or nonresident.

Take a second and drop a sentence worth of advice if you would, maybe something you learned the hard way.

    I'll start with...

No matter what you are hunting and or where you are from, plan to kill something, but don't expect it; there are no guarantees in Alaska!

Read the regs, and when you think you understand them read them 8 more times because there is something important that you missed.
It ain't about the # of pounds of meat we bring back, nor about how much we spent to go do it. Its about seeing what no one else sees.

Do it once and learn, do it twice and refine, do it a third time and get it right.

Go prepared, pack right but not overpack.

Cold and wet ends a trip, so have the right gear for the trip. When I was younger I didnt have the means for exactly the right gear, so I spent some hunting and fishing trips wet and cold..and it ruins it.

Know the regs and land ownership.

A few years ago on X creek on the Koyukuk, some folks dropped a moose on a native allotment, 100yards from the mans door....and F&G spotted them from the air and landed. Nuff said
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

Bears are not completely predicable..respect them, give them their space and be prepared, and maybe you'll won't end up like Timothy Treadwell.

Enjoy the experience - a successful hunt need not involve a kill, though that is certainly icing on the cake.

One thing I try very hard to do everytime: Plan for everything but try to avoid the costly (stupid and painfull) mistakes!!

Plan on that it will rain and it will get windy. Be prepared for both.

Don't ever think you know it all. Listen to advice from someone you know has been there.
