Smile Great News for Whittier Ramps

I just got off the phone with Ed Barrett, new Harbor Master, he told me that there is a plan in the works to repair the east ramp before boating season starts.

Did he mention anything about the redesign of the ramp? The City Manager told us last fall that they were spending over a million to rebuild the east ramp into a three lane.

    Default 3 ramp redesign

He didn't say anything about that, he did say they had to get a new permit to do the repair because of a problem the Corps Of Engineers had, maybe that was the 3 ramp work.

Time will tell. Of course, "repair" could mean about anything. But I guess anything would be an improvement. Boating season starts soon, so either they're going to be real busy real soon (if they're doing lots of work), or what the little time left between now and boating season is an indication of how much repair work they have planned.

I appreciate ACBMan's calling and letting us know what was said.

The redesign (3 lanes, longer floats, etc.) design work is done but for some reason the city has not solicited any bids for the work yet. It was posted on their website, but for some reason YukonTel has been working on moving the city's website so you can't look at the plans. I have a copy of the plan somewhere if you want to look at it ~ send me a PM.

    Default Improved ramps .....

I sure hope they get some work done to improve the ramp situation. Maybe this year is the year??? I have been disappointed too many times now to believe it. With the price of fuel, it is much nicer to launch from Whittier then Homer when I just to enjoy some shrimp and not worry about halibut

    Default Hope?

I guess we can still hope for the best. Last summer the fix for the ramp in the middle was to put gravel at the end of the ramp, maybe $500 worth.

    I hope, but then again.......................

If we're real lucky they will cut off some of the tire slashing rebar and throw a couple of bags of sackcrete in the holes Thats if they are not to busy over there. We ought to just bring our own sackcrete and have a mass spill into the holes.

Another job could be at the pumps. Nice people there but they don't open tell 8 or 8:30 in the morning. A $30 call out if they come before that time. Along with the ramp being fixed, so should the hours for the pumps or at least make them to take a credit card.

    Default Same Old Whittier

I recall last winter reading threads about the Whittier launch, parking, gas problems. Here we all are, a year later, and nothing has been done. I agree with Potbuilder, we (the boaters that use Whittier's facilities/lack of facilities) should carry our own sackcrete. Too bad I cant carry my own boat launch too.

    Default ramps

the catch to all of this is that the state appropriated the money to replace the ramps 2 years ago! The city needs to take charge and get it done, before they take the money back and re-allocate it.

lets all just bring a 5gal pail or two of gravel from around our houses and start dumping it in the holes on the ramps maybe they will get the hint??? I doubt it

The drive up pumps take credit cards, although the area is a bit tight.
If you are halfway decent at backing a trailer, shouldn't be a problem.

I love Whitter but to me they could make a ton of more money if they just open there stores early and fix that ramp.
