    Default Lures and Rods

My boys and I are going to Alaska this summer and are new to the salmon fishing. I was wondering what kind of rods and lures are suggested for the five types of salmon in alaska.

You'll need to give us a little more info if we are to make valid suggestions.

-Are you fishing saltwater or fresh?
-What month will you be here?
-What area will you be fishing?
-What is your priority? (It is highly unlikely that you'll be able to target all 5 species in one trip, though not impossible.)
-Do you prefer fly fishing or casting hardware?

Sorry about that. we are going to be in the Kenai Peninsula and on other rivers. We will be there from July 24th until July 31st. we are also going to a lodge the following week, and the owner told us we will probably catch all five types of salmon. we will be flyfishing or casting, whatever works best. like i said, we are new to it and are trying to learn.

Default There is a long list.

This thread may cover many pages.

Here are some of my opinions as they all will vary.

Kings 17- 30 pound mono or a braided line of the same thickness.
All other salmon 10-20 pound mono.

Use these lines on whatever rod setup you like best.

I use heavy braided for all my salmon fishing. Every once in a while I'll use my trout rod and 6 pound mono to catch a silver or two.

I put 25-30 pound mono on my wife and kids poles for kings and will switch a couple of them(the spinning rods) to 17 or 20 pound for silvers so they can cast spinners.
