    Default Support the Yukon Quest

I helped at the starting line this morning in Fairbanks. It's exciting to be involved in even a small way. I really admire those guys and gals, they are some hardy individuals. I wish them all good speed and a safe journey.

Cool, volunteers are what makes sled dog races possible. The power of a bunch of dogs together really amazes me. Hope you had fun.

Looks like Mackey has moved to the front, looking for a 4th straight title.

I don't have a favorite but Mackey sure looks strong, but it's early and a lot can happen. I'm cheering the over 50 crowd, and especially Cotter at 61, sure hope he finishes in the top 10, What a inspiration to us mid 50 armchair mushers. I was sorry to see Frank drop.

Kelley Griffen and Michelle Phillips are two I"m pulling for. I help out Griffen once in a while in her dog yard.

I just got back from handling for a Quest 300 musher. What fun.

Ken Anderson as well as 4 other mushers forgot to sign out from the Chena Hot Springs checkpoint and will be penalized 2 hours for it. Sure hope he doesn't loose by a less then 2 hour time limit.

    Exclamation Trail looking rough

I heard from a handler this morning. Jumble ice is really bad. Trail breakers had a very difficult time. Lance caught up to the breakers. He and Ken are now at 40 Mile River, Brent is still running in third and should check in anytime. Brent had to drop another dog, so he is now down to 9 strong dogs; less than desired, but this morning's report sounded Like Brent was in good spirits and still feeling confident about his team.

Pics are of breaking trail and Brent

I received a phone call very early this morning...Brent reached Dawson last evening around 11:00. He and the dogs stopped on the trail for a little while. The team and vets were very pleased to see Brent and all 9 dogs happy and healthy. The team prepared tents for the dogs to rest up in. Brent got some much needed rest. Brent ran this last leg hard and he is now in 3rd place! I pray his dogs will remain healthy and have a strong finish. Mackey and Anderson still leading the pack!

Oh, and to answer your question...Three dogs out with sore shoulders. I think one was having back trouble, which resulted in pain to the front shoulder. Memory slipping for more details. No accidents that I know of, just not running to full potential and slowing down the team.

Thanks. From the audio on kuac, Brent considers his team having 10 members, as he is running too lol. Go Brent!

You guys are great with keeping up with all of this.
My son's 3rd grade class is assigned a musher per student and we have been watching it closely as well.
He's assigned to.... Ken Anderson and he is adamantly watching me as I type this.
I, by default, am rooting for Lance because our church secretary (it's her brother).
Brent Sass has been doing incredibly well and I also see that Michelle Phillips and David Dalton is close in front of Brent.
This is going to be a real close race, isn't it?

Brent's dropped to about an hour and a half behind Michelle and Dave. I think he's out of the running for third place, sadly. I'm not sure who I want to win. On one hand, I really like Ken and that would be quite the feather in his hat. On the other hand, this would be Lance's 4th win in a row, continuing him on in his record breaking tradition.

Just read where a pilot who had visited with Brent said he has a virus of some kind and is sick on the trail. Poor guy.

Dont give up on Saas just yet, as he has limped in to Pelly CP, rested and ate a big meal (which he finally kept down) and pulled his hook leaving 1 hr behind Phillips, and 10 min behind Dalton. They've got 77 miles to next CP for a mandatory 8 hr rest, then 100 mile race to finish. Mackey left Carmack 10 minutes before Anderson, so a lot a racing left to be done.

It has been a great race, but barring a catastrophe, it's going to be Mackey or Anderson.
