Not in the winter, that's what dog teams are for lol. A lot of people cross country ski and there are tons of places for that. Have you ever done any? It's fairly easy to learn.

    Default snoe shoes

You can pick up a pair of snow shoes and get around pretty good without skis. Often times you don't even need them on snowmachine trails. I like the magnesium white army ones. They don't float as good as the big wooden ones, but you cant break them either. Pick a trail and have fun! Watch out for trap lines especially if you have a dog with you. Oh and keep an ear out for snowmachines. If you don't want to buy you can rent.

Go prepared, it can be VERY windy and nasty in the hills in the winter. But also there can be significant temperature inversions. 20 below in town and 20 above in the hills. Have fun!

Here's some pictures from a hike up Wikersham Dome in the fall of 04. It was a record breaking fire year as you can tell by the smoke in the air. It's about an 8 mile hike I think.

The wife and I did Wickersham Dome about a month ago...trail was packed all the way through. Depending on if the better half is going with me or not, I limit my winter hiking to -10 and above (just for enjoyment's sake).

Many of the non snowmachine trails in Chena River Rec Area are also packed to where you don't need (or want) snowshoes. Angel Rocks (can be icy--spikes recommended), Granite Tors (if the wind is blowing, once you get out of the trees, it can be bitter--I turned around last winter), and the Chena Dome Trail (same as Granite Tors--you can go three to five miles before the wind gets you) are all recommended.

I spent $100-$130 last year on snowshoes...didn't even break them out from the basement crawl space this year. Breaking trail, obviously recommended.

If you have that option, definitely sign some out. That way you can check out if you like them or not and get to see some pretty country as well.

    Default be careful

If this COLD weather persists be careful. I rode my snowmachine for ten minuets tonight and got a nice piece of frostbite on my nose. Go prepared.
