    Default Kotzebue Grizzly

Thinking about planning a bear/caribou hunt out of Ktoz in Sep 08. How are the populations in this area? What about black bear? Thanks

I was told that you wouldn't see any black bear and didn't when I went. I have heard of many reports of Grizzly though, read the link below.

    Default Griz and Kotz

Griz are thick up here and Black bear is only found in the Kobuk drainage.

Ahhhhhh walt, ever the salesman. Your getting better at promoting your area.
A more truthful statement would be, Griz are thick in unit 23 in certain places at certain times of the year. The upper Kobuk is a good place to find griz and blacks during sept.
Blacks are in fact found also on the upper Selawik, possibly on the way upper Noatak, and along the southern edge of unit 23, such as the tag river.
The trick will be to find a place where you can find at leat 2 of your desired species at the same time. I'm sure Walt can help you there.

I am not from AK, but i have hunted caribou out of KOTZ three years in a row. Mostly along the Noatak River. I heard there's lots of grizz up there, but I have only seen three in three years though I always see tracks everywhere including fresh ones in camp when I wake in the morning. 8-)

9point, I can't comment on the bear situation near Kotz but as someone who used Walt's services for caribou, I sure can recommend him. He is a first class, honest guy who provides great equipment for a fair price.
